About Our Homestead.
Her Homestead Bothwell Hamari Gold

Her Homestead (Harvest · Eggs · Roots) is a small rural flower farm rooted in sustainable growing, community kindness, and the beauty found in everyday life.

Best known for its bold and beautiful dahlias, the kinds of blooms that turn heads and start conversations, the farm grows a wide range of varieties primarily for their tubers. Throughout the season, healthy dahlia tubers, cuttings, garden starts, and houseplants are made available for fellow gardeners who want to grow a little beauty of their own. Every plant is handled with care, and tools are sanitized between uses to help keep both the farm and our customers’ gardens thriving.

Because dahlias thrive when they’re cut regularly, the garden often produces more blooms than any kitchen table could reasonably hold. Rather than letting those flowers go to waste, many of them make their way to the Our Community Stand, a donation-based honour system that allows neighbours to enjoy fresh flowers while also helping support small acts of kindness throughout the community.

Alongside the garden, Her Homestead also offers affordable celebration and tool rentals, helping rural families and small gatherings come together without the big-city price tag.

At its heart, Her Homestead is about growth, generosity, and finding joy in the small things, season after season.

FUN FACT.

There’s more than one way to say Dahlia! In North America, it’s pronounced “da-lee-uh,” while across the pond in Britain, they say “day-lee-uh.” No matter how you say it, you’re right!

Her Homestead Bothwell

“Gardening became more than a hobby. It became therapy. A reminder that slowing down and nurturing something, whether it’s plants, children, or myself, actually matters.”

How It Started.

I didn’t grow up dreaming of a garden, but I did grow up around one.

My parents both worked full-time, owned a coffee shop, and somehow still managed to grow what felt like half the produce aisle in our backyard. Chickens included. Meanwhile, I was far too busy climbing the pear tree and racing the streetlights home to pay any attention to it.

Fast forward a few decades. A business degree, six spinal fusions, and three kids later… and suddenly, I get it.

Almost four years ago, we traded the city for two acres of quiet chaos.

My husband travels for our construction company, my oldest son works alongside him, and my teen headed off to college in the fall. Most days it’s just me and one very feral toddler holding down the fort.

Somewhere between the weeds, snack negotiations, and trying to remember where I set my coffee for the third time, gardening became more than a hobby. It became therapy. A reminder that slowing down and nurturing something, whether it’s plants, children, or myself, actually matters.

Then came the dahlias.

They were supposed to be a hobby. Just a few plants to add some color to our home.

But somewhere along the way I learned that dahlia math is suspiciously similar to chicken math. One tuber becomes ten, ten becomes fifty, and suddenly you’re planning 1,500 plants in the ground and acting like that was the plan all along.

Dramatic. Bold. Slightly unpredictable. My kind of plant.

They start as these knobby little tubers that honestly don’t look like much. But when they bloom? Total showstoppers!!

And their hollow stems always stuck with me. Even the strongest things sometimes need support.

I felt that.

So here we are now. One mom, one toddler, and one patch of land learning, growing, and laughing through it all.

Some days it’s peaceful.
Some days it’s chaos.
And some days I’m just trying to keep everything, including myself, alive.

But every day, something grows.

Flowers. Kids. Maybe even me.

If you’re here reading this, thank you. For taking a minute out of your day to stop by, learn a little about us, and maybe share a laugh or find a little inspiration.

This space isn’t perfect, it’s real. It’s dirt under my nails, coffee gone cold, and joy in the little things. If anything here reminds you to slow down, breathe, or see the beauty in your own messy garden, then it’s all worth it.

Here’s to growing good things, in our gardens, in our homes, and in ourselves.

Cheers,

♡ Jo

What We Offer.
Her Homestead Bothwell Family 3

Everything here is grown, made, or shared at a small scale. What’s available changes with the season, the weather, and real life. We focus on doing a few things well, locally, and with care

Community-focused projects and sharing
Small acts of neighbourly support, Her Homestead is rooted in the idea of sharing what we have, when we can. Some projects are planned, others happen organically.

Dahlia Tubers & Cuttings
We’re focused on growing strong, healthy dahlias and building our stock thoughtfully. While we currently offer dahlia cuttings, tuber sales are planned for 2027, once varieties are well established and ready to be shared with confidence.

Houseplant cuttings and rooted plants, available seasonally
Seasonal cuttings and starter plants grown at home, including Creeping Jenny, Aloe Vera, Monstera, Pothos, and other easy-care favourites. Availability depends on growth and the season.

Handmade Goods
Small crafted items like coffee mugs and other simple pieces made as time allows. These are offered casually at the roadside when available.

24-Hour Rentals
A small selection of tools, equipment, crafting equipment, and items for simple celebrations. Rentals are intended to support local needs, whether it’s a weekend project, a craft night, or a backyard get-together.
